YMCA of Metro Atlanta Honors Volunteers and Partners With Annual Celebration of Community Champions

On Monday, February 10, 2020, the YMCA of Metro Atlanta celebrated the vision and insight of our partners, volunteers and teen leaders at our annual Celebration of Community Champions. With the theme 2020 Vision, the celebration focused on seeing the impact and being the impact within our communities.

At the Y, we know that everyone sees the world through their own lens, and with the help of so many partners and volunteers, we work hard to achieve our vision of building communities where everyone belongs. Celebration of Community Champions was an opportunity to recognize partners, volunteers and teen leaders who have their eyes on the future and help us make an impact within the communities we serve.

The YMCA was honored to present Dr. Walter Young and Ambassador Andrew Young with the Bransby Christian Leadership Award, our highest honor for volunteer service to the Y and the community. We also introduced two new awards in 2020 — Nonprofit Partner of the Year, presented to the Atlanta Police Foundation, and Corporate Partner of the Year, presented to Kaiser Permanente. Plus, we recognized Volunteers of the Year and Teen Leaders of the Year from each Y branch, as well as our 2019 Fundraisers of the Year, Mark Spain and Jayden Bohannon!

The Celebration of Community Champions concluded with the kick-off of the 2020 WHY IT MATTERS Annual Giving Campaign. WHY IT MATTERS raises funds to provide scholarships that allow children and families in our communities to access the Y’s life-changing programs, regardless of their circumstances or background. Thanks to the 2019 WHY IT MATTERS Campaign donors, we were able to offer access and opportunity to approximately 32,000 children, teens adults and seniors in the form of scholarships for memberships, day and resident camps, swim lessons, teen leadership programs, youth sports, afterschool and early learning last year.

For 2020, we have set our sights on the biggest campaign goal in the history of our Y — $5 million! The Y is thankful to have so many outstanding volunteers and strong community partners to help us achieve this ambitious goal.
