Veteran Spotlight: Charles Poole

In celebration of Veteran’s Day on November 11, the YMCA is recognizing the service and commitment of veterans in our community. From Sweat Like a Vet group exercise classes to making cards for members of the military, the Y is celebrating veterans all week. We are thrilled to highlight a member of our Y family who is a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Georgia Army National Guard, Charles Poole.

Charles lives in Southwest Atlanta and is a member of the Villages at Carver Family YMCA. Charles served in the Army from 1978 to 2006 and was stationed at approximately eight different military bases, including Germany from 1980 to 1983. Military service is a family tradition for Charles — his father, three uncles, sister and son have all served our country.

Charles continues to serve others today as a volunteer at the Villages of Carver Family YMCA. In fact, he will be recognized in early 2020 as the branch’s Volunteer of the Year for his dedication to the YMCA.

Charles’s motto is Life is Good. According to The Villages at Carver Family Y Executive Director, Monteil Weeks, “He says good morning to literally every member, guest, staff person when he is at the Y and encourages all of us to be positive and to always seek the good in others. Whenever a new member is beginning their journey at the YMCA, Mr. Poole personally welcomes them and gives them a tour. He loves people. He truly is the epitome of what it means to serve.”

Thank you to Charles and all veterans and active service members. We appreciate all you do for our country and our communities.
