Summit Family YMCA Gives Newnan Veterans Affairs Clinic 15 Membership Vouchers for Veterans

Organizations partner to provide services to veterans in the community

The Summit Family YMCA will provide 15 membership vouchers to the Newnan Veterans Affairs (VA) Clinic to help subsidize the cost of an adult membership for participants in the clinic’s Move! program. The course is a weight management, health promotion program designed to improve the lives of veterans by encouraging healthy eating behavior and increased physical activity.

In 2019, the Summit Y and Newnan VA Clinic met to share ideas on how to collaborate and strengthen services to veterans at the clinic. Through those conversations, the goal to provide a pipeline of subsidized Y memberships to veterans seen in the MOVE! program was identified. In response to the need, the Summit Family YMCA’s staff and volunteers worked together to create the Y’s Veterans’ Expo, with the purpose to engage and support the local military community by fostering connections to organizations and support groups. Through sponsorships and exhibitor participation at the expo, and support given to the Y through its WHY IT MATTERS Annual Giving Campaign, the Summit Y was able to subsidize the cost of the membership and offer vouchers for a yearlong membership to participants in the local MOVE! program.

“This collaboration with the Newnan VA Clinic and the Y is one in which we are proud,” said Heather Carter, associate executive director of the Summit Family YMCA. “Through membership, we will not only be able to provide veterans an opportunity to supplement their healthy eating with the Y’s Coach Approach behavior change program, but we will also, and perhaps more importantly, give veterans a place to belong and reconnect to themselves and their families.”

The clinic memberships will be distributed through a Newnan VA Clinic MOVE! dietitian. In addition, Newnan VA Outpatient Clinic staff can request Summit Y membership vouchers for veterans in need of Y membership benefits. Those memberships are limited to the Summit Family YMCA of Newnan location only.

“The veterans in the MOVE! program are very happy to have this opportunity to help them with their weight management journey,” said Anne Borders, Newnan VA Clinic MOVE! dietitian.
