The YMCA of Metro Atlanta’s Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer Lauren Koontz, Vice President of Early Learning Youlanda Upkins, and Executive Director at the Arthur M. Blank Family Youth YMCA Tony Kimbrough recently appeared on WABE’s “Closer Look with Rose Scott.”
In a themed segment about community initiatives on Atlanta’s Westside, they discussed the Y’s growth over the past 160 years and talked about the organization’s focus as we move our headquarters to Atlanta’s Westside.
“We’re going to go and become part of the community,” said Koontz. “This is the first time in our history that our headquarters, which is a support center, is going to move into a neighborhood, and in addition to being the headquarters, will be an outreach and community center.”
The Y is changing and adapting based on the needs of the community, and the new Leadership and Learning Center will focus on educating Atlanta’s youth, training YMCA employees and serving the needs of the surrounding community.
“When we get in that neighborhood, we want to listen, we want to partner, and we want to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and say, ‘how can this Y serve this unique community,’” Koontz said.
