Volunteer

Get involved and make a difference in your community!

Volunteers are vital to the success of the Metro Atlanta YMCA. From youth sports coaches and board members to parent advisory committees or fund raisers, volunteers make the Y what it is today. More than 5,000 men, women, teens, and families volunteered for Metro Atlanta YMCA programs in 2007. You can join them, right in your community! Whether you're interested in giving your time to a one-time group activity, on the board of your local YMCA or to an on-going program, this is the place to start. Check out the volunteer opportunities or contact the YMCA nearest you.

Benefits of Volunteering with the YMCA:Volunteer Application
The Metro Atlanta YMCA offers volunteers a chance to improve the lives of children and families and to make our communities stronger.  In addition to feeling great about your efforts, volunteers have the opportunity to:

  • Experience personal growth
  • Give back to the community  through service to others
  • Explore and/or discover a hidden passion
  • Expand knowledge and skills through training
  • Fulfill community service requirements for school credit
  • Develop new relationships and make friends
  • Gain community service experience to add to college, financial aid, scholarship and employment applications
  • Learn, grow and HAVE FUN!

Note:   The Metro Atlanta YMCA does not offer memberships in exchange for volunteer service.  However, volunteers are provided reasonable facility use related to their roles, subject to limits approved by the branch executive.

How to get started:
Volunteers are critically important to carrying out our mission, so we ask our program volunteers to go through an application and screening process similar to that of our paid staff members.  This process ensures that the best fit is made between the new volunteer and the program they are matched with, while also ensuring the safety of our members, participants, staff and all of our volunteers.  (This process does not apply to our policy and fund raising volunteers.)

You can access our volunteer opportunities (above). You may apply by completing an online volunteer interest form. If you need additional information, please e-mail careers@ymcaatlanta.org or call the staff development department, (404) 588-9622 . You also can apply at the YMCA you choose. Click here for YMCA locations

Before starting a volunteer assignment with the YMCA, a staff member will walk you through the following steps of our application process:

  1. Interview: YMCA staff members and prospective volunteers can ask each other questions to make sure that the best possible fit is made.
  2. Volunteer Application: Basic background and contact information.
  3. Reference Checks: We complete reference checks on each of our new volunteers.
  4. Job Description: We provide our volunteers with a job description, often created with the input of the volunteer, so expectations are clear for all parties.
  5. Orientation cd and work book reviewing safety, bloodborne pathogens and child abuse training: This process helps us to ensure your safety as well as the safety of all of our participants.
  6. Background Checks: All volunteers working with youth and other vulnerable populations are subject to a criminal background check.  Having a criminal background does not necessarily prevent someone from volunteering; situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
