2009-10 South DeKalb Child Care Program

The South DeKalb YMCA Prime Time After School Program is designed to provide quality child care for all students to develop intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically in a safe environment.  Family and community involvement is strongly encouraged to support our program goals.  Reasonable fees are available to accommodate the entire community.

The Prime Time Program is State Licensed and provides a safe, supportive environment with realistic and appropriate expectations.  Our focus is to develop the whole child through the YMCA's traditional curriculum, the Spirit-Mind-Body Triangle.

Our programs are tools for building character.  The Prime Time Program helps school aged children develop values and behaviors that are consistent with being model citizens.

Program Components

Nutrition
A nutritious snack is provided daily.

Homework/Tutorial Assistance
Academic Support Staff: At each site there are Academic Support staff members to properly assist and tutor students in reading and math lesson. Our Academic Support Staff members are trained and certified teachers within the DeKalb County School System and are available three days per week to assist with our tutorial programs.  Staff will provide daily assistance in the completion of homework.  The classroom weekly agenda will be used as a support guide to insure completion.

Recreational
Organized, outdoor and indoor game activities that will address fitness and general fun.

Skill Development
The specific age appropriate instruction in math and reading skills.  The skills development time will utilize technology, daily reading time, and scheduled review sessions to significantly support the skill development in reading and math.  The YMCA will use the KidzLit and KidzMath as a main resource.

In addition to our enrichment activities, the South DeKalb YMCA has taken an interest in our children’s Mathematical and Reading levels in our Prime Time programs. We have implemented Math sessions twice per week at every Prime Time site to boost test scores and give each child a stronger understanding of their math work from class.  We have also created Reading tutorials to enhance our children’s ability to correctly identify letters and sounds. The participants in the Prime Time program will study spelling words three times per week and have spelling games every Thursday to prepare each child for tests at their respective schools on the following Friday.

Enrichment
Seasonal enrichment activities that support the goal of exposing children to a myriad of activities and experiences (example:  chess, monopoly, word games, etc.). The Prime Time program also offers enrichment activities such as: Conflict resolution, Youth Fit For Life, Creative Arts and Character Development courses.

  • Conflict Resolution – To create a concept of taking responsibility for one’s actions and learning how to deal with hardships and disputes with others.
  • Youth Fit For Life – Targeted at improving the fitness and health of our young people, as well as promoting an appreciation for a physically active and healthful lifestyle throughout childhood and into adulthood.
  • Creative Arts – This activity introduces the students to different aspects of the arts such as music, poetry, dance, writing, painting, live performance and plays.
  • Character Development – This activity works to build each child's self-esteem and confidence. Each child receives reassurance regarding their own capabilities and is encouranged to set high achievement goals.
