Volunteer of the Year 2009

The South DeKalb Family YMCA recognizes Felicia Mitchell as our 2009 Volunteer of the Year.

Felicia Mitchell

A True Light: “There are many community organizations, but the Y is different because of the C in YMCA. The challenge is when we leave church and have to conduct business in the world. The YMCA reaches into the community and combines the Christian belief with recreation and family support.”

Good for the Soul: “The YMCA provides such a wonderful place for children and families to grow. They are in the world, but a protected corner of the world, where they will be safe.

The Right Atmosphere: “Because of kids having a sensory overload these days, it’s our responsibility, as adults, to help them make decisions. Children need to know it’s okay to make mistakes, because that’s how they will learn and grow. Y after-school programs are so important, because they foster an environment where kids have the ability to learn and grow with their peers.”

Lending a Hand: “When the DeKalb County School System was wrestling with the issue of school involvement in after school care, the Y stepped up to the plate. The Y provides a safe and reliable place for parents to leave their children. The Y has remained a friend through a partnership of mutual support. I just can’t say enough about the wholesome image of the Y and the positive impact it has on the community.”

Career: With  DeKalb Schools for 34 years.  Associate Superintendent of Support Services, DeKalb County School System

Children: Michelle and David

Grandchildren: Camille, Kristen, Ronald III, and Kelly

Partner With Youth Annual Scholarship Program

Our Partner With Youth annual giving campaign lends the support needed to make sure that every life can be enriched through education, physical fitness and character development at the YMCA.  Because of the generosity of our donors, the South DeKalb Family YMCA is able to award scholarships to those who would otherwise not be able to participate in our programs.

Through a donation of:

  • $400, you can support one child with one month of quality pre-school learning and education.
  • $110, you can create lifelong memories and friendships by sending a child to summer day camp for one week.
  • $65, you can give a child an opportunity to develop character values, team work, self-esteem and fundamental skills by playing on a recreational sports team.
  • $60, you can give kids self-confidence and teach them water safety skills.

Consider giving a child the chance to build a healthy lifestyle and attitude through participation in YMCA programs.  This will prepare their Spirit, Mind and Body for a future filled with hope and promise.  Please support our efforts to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
