Some of our Success Stories
Becca has been in adapted aquatics at the Y for over 6 years and loves coming here to swim. Becca, a 19 year old student at Loganville High, has Spina Bifida and is wheelchair bound. Within the last year, she has finally met her goal of swimming across the pool by herself without a flotation device. Together with a modified strength training regimen and swim lessons, Becca’s upper body strength has greatly improved. She regularly swims between 10 and 18 laps during her swim class. Becca was a star as the only wheelchair bound participant in regular aquatics at the 2004 State Summer Games for Special Olympics. She was so proud of her gold medal! Becca’s mom says, “Kimberly has worked nothing short of a miracle. This goal was hard to come by and took a long time, but Kimberly didn’t give up even when I was ready to.”
Zachary has one of the biggest smiles at the Fowler Y. Zachary is a child with autism and had his first swim lesson at the Y two years ago. He loves swimming and is working hard on swimming with big arms and swimming on his back. Here is what Zachary's mom had to say: "We have tried instructors at several swim facilities located closer to our home, but none of their instructors had any rapport with Zachary or the ability to really teach him any skills such as floating, stroking, blowing bubbles, breathing, and swimming under water... We have found no other activity that will keep Zachary as happy and interactive as swimming. Kimberly's ability to teach and challenge him keeps Zachary progressing more and more in all aspects of his life."
